Reinsurance

The reinsurance business of the Helvetia Group, consisting of the two profit centres Assumed Reinsurance and Group Reinsurance, is conducted from our head office in St.Gallen.

For over 140 years, Helvetia also underwrites a small but successful reinsurance portfolio and is therefore among the oldest reinsurers in Europe. Helvetia Versicherungen is the insurance carrier. While fire reinsurance dominated the business until the mid-nineties, the reinsurance business in force has evolved into a well-diversified portfolio with special focus on the OECD area.

Underwriting a global Assumed Reinsurance account creates significant and cost-efficient synergy effects for the internal Group Reinsurance by revealing their helpfulness when optimal coverage concepts at optimal pricing are structured and actuarially simulated. Furthermore, specialised resources, such as IT and cost accounting are put to an efficient use. Thanks to this dual function – assumed and outwards reinsurance within one organisational unit – the reinsurance division is provided with background knowledge on the needs of a reinsurance purchaser but is also intimately familiar with the concerns of our reinsurers.
