Helvetia Swiss Cup: challenged by the fifth-leaguers

In the first round of the Helvetia Swiss Cup 2017/2018, it is a duel between David and Goliath. The fifth-league team FC Union-Sportive Montfaucon encounters Neuchâtel Xamax from the Challenge League. The amateurs from the canton of Jura are going for broke.

On 12 August, 2017, the FC Union-Sportive Montfaucon players will compete in the game of their lives. The draw for the Helvetia Cup 2017/2018 gave the Jurassic fifth-leaguers a duel with Neuchâtel Xamax from the second highest league. As a representative of the fifth league, Montfaucon is a minor outsider in the competition: Except for FC Hausen am Albis, which is at home in the third league, all of the other players this year play in at least the second league.

Taking part in the cup thanks to fair play

The reason the amateurs are even allowed to play in the Swiss cup is due to their exemplary playing. Out of 800 teams taking part, they emerged as the fairest team and the winners of the SUVA Fairplay Trophy, the reward for which is direct qualification for the Helvetia Swiss Cup.

The fact that they have now been drawn against Neuchâtel Xamax, a team from the Jura region and the Challenge League of all things, is spurring the amateurs from Montfaucon on. “Motivation is our trump card in this duel. We will do everything we can to be well prepared. But above all we want to enjoy the game,” says Denis Chaignat, President of the team, speaking to the Swiss Football Association.

The game of games

Off the pitch, the club will also be engaged in meeting high standards, for example in the area of safety. “US Montfaucon” hopes to enlist the help of lots of volunteers for a variety of other purposes, such as logistical or catering tasks. “The encounter will be a fantastic experience for the players and the club,” Denis Chaignat states with certainty.
