Hanging out with ... Rémi Georgiou

Rémi Georgiou

What is your job at Helvetia?

I work as a software engineer in the Front-End Solutions Development team in St. Gallen. I wrote the back-end of the cyber insurance product and was heavily involved in upgrading two web applications. As a member of the agile development team I am also working on modernizing our quotation system for the Non-Life division while also performing the role of scrum master.

What excites you about this? What were the highlights so far?

I can think of quite a few. I am a big fan of Scrum, the agile software development process so I really appreciate having a lot of freedom in my day-to-day work and being able to arrange my time myself.

I develop microservices for responsive and fail-safe cloud-native web applications with modern technologies and tools while applying engineering best practices.

I am also motivated by the trust my manager places in me and the good vibe in the team.

It was exciting to take part in the two Helvetia hackathons so far. I appreciated the opportunity to work on new ideas and projects with colleagues from Basel and Vienna.

What challenges do you face in your work?

As a software engineer I have excellent technical expertise as regards developing modern software, however, as I have never worked in an insurance company before, I don't have specialist knowledge of the industry.

The challenge or art is to translate the needs and specialist requirements of our customers into an error-free, functional and user-friendly software product.

We work with the DevOps practices. For me there is always lots of new stuff to learn and potential to optimize the deployment process to our value chains. My focus is on the customer, so new software features have to be distributed quickly and smoothly.

What does "&Go" mean to you?

Making decisions alone or in a development team and introducing new ideas. These aren't just pretty words, for us this is reality. So work is fun and that's why for me, "&Go" means: tackling the job, getting it done and creating value for my customers!

And what's more ...

… I spend a lot of time on endurance and strength training. It helps to reduce my stress levels after work and I also enjoy doing something that is good for my body.

If I'm not doing sport, then I really enjoy producing electronic music on my computer which allows me to give free reign to my creativity.
