Anyone who follows the news could be forgiven for thinking that the future is just one big crisis waiting to happen. Geopolitical conflicts, cost-of-living costs on the rise, climate change and provision for retirement regularly dominate the headlines. This makes the findings of a representative survey carried out by the market research organisation Sotomo on behalf of Helvetia all the more remarkable. Despite having some cause for concern, four out of five people in Switzerland are optimistic about their personal prospects for the coming year.
Confidence goes far beyond optimism or positive thinking; it means believing that you can overcome challenges and achieve your life goals, despite uncertainty. The results of the survey show that people draw their confidence primarily from their personal environment. Friendships, relationships and family are some of the most valuable sources of confidence, although health, belief in your own capabilities and financial security are just as important.
“Confidence does not arise in a vacuum, but grows where people experience support, closeness, encouragement and financial security.”
According to the survey, almost everyone in Switzerland has specific life goals (98%). Some of the most common goals include the desire to grow old in good health, travel, relationships, professional fulfilment and the dream of owning a home.
The survey also shows that financial resources are a decisive factor. In fact, 82% of respondents state that financial resources are an important prerequisite for achieving their life goals. Insufficient financial means, along with factors such as health and fate, are cited as some of biggest obstacles.
Financial security is about much more than just accumulating wealth and making wise investments. It gives people the freedom they need to make decisions – whether that’s starting a family, buying their own home, changing careers or thinking about retirement.
“Starting a family, buying a home, changing careers or retiring without a care in the world: we support our customers by taking a holistic view of insurance, pensions, assets and home ownership, and showing them how they can achieve their life goals from a financial perspective.”
Confidence doesn’t just happen at the flick of a switch. It grows when people feel trust, guidance and support – in their private lives, at work and when making important financial decisions. That’s precisely why Helvetia sees itself as more than just an insurer.
By taking a holistic consultancy approach, Helvetia is able to accompany people through every stage of their lives, from insurance and pensions to assets and home ownership. Because ultimately, when you know the important areas of your life are covered, you’re free to focus on what really matters: pursuing your own goals with confidence.
The data was collected between 9 and 18 June 2026. Data from 1,866 people was included in the analysis. The weighted sample is representative of the resident population of Switzerland in terms of key socio-demographic characteristics.
