Insurance for caravans and motor homes

In the heart of nature, over passes, alongside lakes and forests – with motor home or caravan insurance, you can enjoy your trip without any worries.
Insuring caravans or motor homes – what's the difference?
A motor home, also called a camper van or mobile home, is a motorized vehicle. A caravan, on the other hand, is a trailer that does not have its own engine. And this is precisely where the insurance differs:
Motor home

By law, every motorized vehicle must have liability insurance. You must therefore take out motor vehicle liability insurance for your motor home, which will protect you against damage to third parties.

Caravan

You cannot take out liability insurance for a caravan. However, the vehicle pulling the caravan must be covered by compulsory liability insurance.

Do I need fully comprehensive or partially comprehensive in­surance for my caravan or motor home?
As with car insurance, you can take out partially or fully comprehensive insurance for your motor home or caravan. The most appropriate solution will depend on the value, the age of the vehicle and your personal need for protection.

Fully comprehensive insurance

Fully comprehensive insurance protects your motor home or caravan even in the event of damage caused by you. For example, if you see the wall too late when parking, the insurer will pay for the damage. Of course, all partially comprehensive benefits are also included.

Partially comprehensive insurance insures the motor home or caravan against theft, flooding, accidents involving wildlife, or storm or hail damage. Partially comprehensive insurance covers you for any loss or damage to the vehicle that is not caused by you or by other drivers.

“Assistance” breakdown service

It's annoying when you leave the campsite and discover you have a flat tyre just a short while later. In such cases, it's worth having supplementary “Assistance” insurance. This covers the costs of breakdown and vehicle recovery services. Helvetia also assumes the costs of a rental car, public transport tickets or overnight accommodation costs as well as repatriation costs for the vehicle that has been left behind.

Tyre damage

With this add-on, we cover the cost of damage to tyres caused by nails, kerbs, sharp objects or vandalism/malicious damage.

You can enjoy even greater protection with our optional services that are tailored to your needs. These include a premium waiver, legal protection for your vehicle, an update guarantee and psychological aftercare.

Parking damage

After taking a break at a service station, you notice on returning to the car park that someone has dented your motor home. And the culprit has left without a trace. With supplementary parking damage insurance, Helvetia will cover the costs of repairing your vehicle.

Gross negligence waiver

If you are grossly negligent, for example if you go through a red light or get distracted by your phone, Helvetia will not claim any money back from you in the event of a claim. If you are travelling with a caravan, you can include this protection in your car insurance.

Passenger accident insurance

This add-on covers bodily injury suffered by the driver and passengers in the event of an accident. Pets such as dogs and cats are also covered. If you are travelling by caravan, you can include this protection in your car insurance.

What insurance cover will I need when renting or renting out a motor home?

If you rent out your camper van free of charge, the insurance policies that you have taken out will also apply. The person who caused the damage is liable for the deductible and any loss of a no-claims bonus. As soon as you rent out your motor home for a fee, different regulations apply. You should talk to your insurance company about whether the costs will be covered and under what conditions. If you rent out the camper van via sharing platforms, insurance is usually included. Please read the terms and conditions carefully before renting out your vehicle.

Is the insurance also valid abroad?

Your motor home or caravan insurance from Helvetia is also valid – with just a few exceptions – in the rest of Europe as well as in non-European Mediterranean countries and Mediterranean island states. “Assistance” insurance for motor vehicles is also valid outside of Switzerland.


Exceptions: Your motor home or caravan insurance is not valid in Russia, Belarus, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Israel or Iran. In the territory of Kosovo, the insurance does not cover liability
