Which insurance policy covers storm damage?

Defined as winds at speeds of 75 km/h or above, storms are one of the natural occurrences covered by insurance. Which insurance policy pays depends on what has been damaged.

Household contents insurance

Household contents insurance covers damage to all your belongings. The individual items may be in the house, in the summerhouse on the property or in the garage.
Outside your home too, you are covered throughout Switzerland. For example, if your bicycle is at the railway station and is damaged in a storm.

Good to know

Anyone wishing to also protect their summerhouse, plants and swimming pool against storm damage can do so quite easily by adding the household contents supplementary insurance for the building’s surroundings.

Buildings insurance

In most cantons, compulsory cantonal buildings insurance covers storm damage to the building. In the industry jargon, this is called “damage caused by natural forces”. It is important for the owners to have the building regularly appraised so that they do not find themselves under-insured.

Good to know

Have the roof checked by a roofer on a regular basis.

To prevent damage and accidents, there are several safety precautions that you should take whenever a storm is announced. With this checklist, you can prepare your house and garden for the storm, even at the last minute.

Close windows and doors
Retract solar blinds and pull up window blinds
Secure or dismantle loose objects on the facade
Put vehicles in the garage
Seal window and door openings
Have a drainage pump ready for indoor flooding
Disconnect electrical devices from the power supply
Switch off electricity in the basement (danger of short circuits in the event of possible flooding)
Tie down loose objects, garden furniture or heavy plant pots
Stow away potted plants, toys and garden equipment as well as decorative elements
Tie up trees and bushes
Dismantle trampolines

Correct behavior during the storm

In the event of a storms, people can easily be injured by trees, falling roof tiles or flying objects. That's why it's important for us to protect not only our belongings but ourselfes during the storm. Keep in mind the following safety rules:
