Yes, motorcycle liability insurance is compulsory in Switzerland. In order to register your scooter with the driver and vehicle licensing office you must be able to prove that you have liability insurance.

What is covered by liability insurance?

Liability insurance protects you financially against any damage you cause with your scooter or Vespa.

What does partial casco cover?

Partial casco covers damage to your scooter that is caused neither by you nor by another driver or rider.

Helvetia pays in the event of:

Damage caused by storm, hail, high water, landslide, avalanche, snow pressure and falling rocks
Snow falling from roofs and branches falling under the weight of snow
Damage caused by martens or accidents involving wild animals

Fire and consequential losses resulting from fire-fighting operations
Malicious damage such as the slashing or disfigurement of saddle bags and seats
Theft

What does comprehensive insurance cover?

Comprehensive insurance also covers you for damage you cause to your scooter yourself.

Helvetia pays:

For all benefits available with partial casco cover
For damage you cause to your scooter yourself – e.g. in the event of a rear-end collision or scraping a post
For recovery, transport and towing costs up to CHF 10,000
Storage costs and parking charges up to CHF 500

For the recovery of a stolen vehicle if found within 30 days following a claim
In the event of a total loss: the current value or the current value supplement if taken out
For the cost of repairs in the event of partial damage

Is scooter insurance compulsory?

What do I need to register my new Vespa or scooter?

To register your new scooter with the driver and vehicle licensing office, you will need the following documents:

A certificate of insurance showing that you have liability insurance. You can order one simply online.
For new scooters, an inspection report. You will receive the form (13.20) from the vehicle dealer.
For used scooters, the previous vehicle registration document.
